Only auditors registered with an appropriate professional body and qualified under the Companies Act 1989 or the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 can provide external audit services to higher education institutions. External auditors are expected to conform to the auditing and accounting standards issued by the Auditing Practices Board and Accounting Standards Committee respectively, as well as to the requirements of the HEFCE Audit Code of Practice.
